I view that as a nuisance to the Internet, and try to avoid it. Obviously the size limit on twitter necessitates it sometimes. So twidge does it only as necessary.

I would accept:

 * A patch to the manpage to make this clear

* A patch that adds a setting for shorten all URLs, defaulting to false, and documents it

I do not want to just make it shorten everything with no option to disable that. I would view this as a bug, putting links in the hands of third parties with no need.
