KeyError: u'2008PhRvL.101u1102A' 1 $This is caused by a missing citation in the bibtex. This is obviously an unacceptable failure, and certainly causes pybtex to fail as a "drop in replacement" for bibtex, which only produces warnings on missing citations.
Thanks for your bug report. I confirm that the bug is real (though personally I don't mind such behaviour at all). The issue should have been already known to the upstream author and will be hopefully fixed soon.
