thanks for your strace and your gdb backtrace. It looks like there is
a problem with scim and gtk. Could you please check what scim packages
you have installed? I tried installing schim and scim-gtk2-immodules
but synaptic does not crash for me. Could you also check if moving
away /root/.scim does help before you start synaptic?
