We can't ask clients to update their software,

Apache, IIS are already working around that issue, why not lighttpd ?

Providing a workaround has been stupid in the first place, and it is still stupid. Why support software which hasn't been able to fix a known bug in more than 5 years?

Every time you start providing such workarounds it is your fault too if the original bug doesn't get fixed!
