I did changed ownership of /dev/cdrom (root, cdrom --> $user, cdrom)
and run `gxine -vvv`. then encountered setup wizard again.

so modified /etc/fstab (/dev/hdc --> /dev/cdrom) and run again. but same situation occurred again. :(
also subtracted hal from cdrom group to leave $user-account alone, and did again --> wizard also occurred.

attached my verbose message file: "verbose".

ok, now the version of `libxine1` for amd64( == pure64) is 1.0.1-1.2 not 1.0.2.
so am I seeing the old bug everytime?

`dpkg -s libxine1` says :

Section: libs
Installed-Size: 8732
Maintainer: Siggi Langauf <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Architecture: amd64
Source: xine-lib
Version: 1.0.1-1.2

At least I now know for certain that the configuration isn't being saved.
This is a symptom of some other problem, and also why you're seeing the setup
wizard every time you start gxine.

To see what's going on, run gxine from the terminal window:
  gxine -vvv

gxine will produce lots of debug text. Now quit gxine. A few more lines will
be printed, beginning with
  engine: > executing 'exit();'...

The lines after this one are of interest here. There may be a few lines
beginning with "configfile:"; if there aren't, you should check
~/.gxine/config to see if it's no longer empty.

It would now be a good idea to make sure that you have write access to
~/.gxine and its contents and that there is enough space in the partition
which contains your home directory. Once this is done, you should run gxine
again ("gxine -vvv" again), quit it and again check the last few lines of
output and ~/.gxine/config.

(And if it _is_ working properly, this bug report can be closed. I'm already
reasonably sure that it isn't a bug in gxine.)

No; this is unrelated.

This is unrelated to your configuration problem, which I'm fairly certain
isn't caused by gxine.

I'm reasonably sure that if the /dev/cdrom symlink exists and points to the
correct device, you are seeing the effect of a bug in libxine1. This bug is
fixed in 1.0.2.
