Here is some additional information from the upgrade:

Preparing to replace debconf 1.5.20 (using .../debconf_1.5.36_all.deb) ...
xargs: xargs.c:443: main: Assertion `bc_ctl.arg_max <= (131072-2048)' failed.

 subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 134
Errors were encountered while processing:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
xargs: xargs.c:443: main: Assertion `bc_ctl.arg_max <= (131072-2048)' failed.

Then I've manually upgraded findutils first ("apt-get install
findutils"), which apparently fixed it (despite the comment in
the Ubuntu bug report which connects this bug to glibc).

I had findutils 4.2.32-1ubuntu2 installed, and upgraded to 4.4.2-1.
