I tested with Shotwell: Shotwell, a graphical photo organizer for GNOME, has the same problem than gThumb: it seems to fail to find the camera. As the website explains, it uses "gPhoto to communicate with digital cameras", so the problem could be more the info exposed by gPhoto than gThumb itself (and Shotwell too)?
