For a while ( after installing the version of "intel" you suggested ) the bug did disappear, but ... the "intel" driver has been under heavy debugging / developement Freezes and crashes of X have vanished, at least it's been a while since the last. Too bad that sometime when I was not looking, the dirty frames problem in emacs reappeared...
