I'm not familiar with mc so I'm not sure how to try to reproduce this bug. I have fixed some sizing bugs since 1.18.5 so please can you try the latest git so I know whether I can close this bug in the next Debian release. Unfortunately Squeeze is frozen with 1.18.5-3; there have been too many changes since then to make it practical to make a freeze exception.
