the assumption would have been made by the tools from 
the mime-support package; exmh itself doesn't do sound.

yes, and i couldn't. i still need the following info from you,
then i'll do my best to hunt down the problem.

fgrep -e sound -e audio /etc/exmh.conf ~/.exmh/exmh-defaults
fgrep -e audio/ /etc/mailcap
