This issue is a another bad side effect of bug #600962 "IMAP: [mutt] ignores \Recent flag but rolls its own replacement".
The stalls when closing a large INBOX happen when there are many messages which mutt hasn't seen before; mutt then (silently) stores the 'Old' keyword for all of them, which can take a long time. I recall reading that upstream doesn't want to trust the server's \Recent flag handling; still, this workaround for some broken IMAP servers (anyone knows one?) comes with a high cost. At least, there really should be a way to turn this off. I personally would definitely prefer to have it off by default, instead of having to tweak the configuration to get a standards-compliant MUA without such broken workarounds.
