To be more specific: upower already has a freebsd backend (for stuff like xfce-power-manager) udisks does not and is currently Linux-only. GIO/GVFS uses udisks/g-d-u on Linux and hal on kfreebsd in Debian. If the xfce apps use GIO they should not be concerned about how the lower layers are implemented.
