Several fsck operations take a long time, e.g., # fsck.vfat -t -a /dev/sdc1 on a 1 GB flash drive took, it turned out, four minutes. During that time one does not know if the program will ever finish, nor does one dare to interrupt it lest the disk be ruined, etc. Nor does one dare to mount or remove ones disk.
