Following your suggestions, I think I got to the bottom of my problem. The machine I was running on had virtualbox installed a long time ago and this is what was being picked up as the default URI $ virsh uri vbox:///system Following the information http://libvirt.org/uri.html.Setting the following environment variable VIRSH_DEFAULT_CONNECT_URI=qemu:///system solves my problem.
