I've tried to reproduce with the version in Squeeze (including forcing the deletion of /etc/xdg/tint2/tint2rc which appears to be part of the situation with the submitter based on reportbug) without problems. Not tagging unreproducible because I was testing on an otherwise Sid machine with another panel also running.
