Right, I forgot about the Sphinx reference. jQuery in itself doesn't solve much, but it's true that you could do what Sphinx does (generate *another* index only for the Javascript searches and use that if there's no web server installed). However, unless I'm missing something that would imply writing fairly complex indexing code to create Sphinx-compatible indices from our currently-supported documentation formats (PDF, Postscript, HTML). That sounds like a lot of work and potential issues to me :-(
