Thanks, this summary makes sense to me. Since docbook.conf and docbook45.conf are not byte-for-byte identical, if docbook.conf is changed then dpkg would ask the user to intervene. The scenario to fear: once Sean Finney's nice work is integrated into dpkg, dpkg will remember the full text instead of just the md5sum of the old conffile and one of the options in that prompt would be to run a 3-way merge (as if using ucf).
