After deeper investigation, it appears that this bug is a duplicate of #514976 (i.e lot of disks and extended naming scheme not supported by Grub). Compiling Grub from trunk or upgrading to 1.99~rc1-1 from Experimental fixed the problem. Nevertheless, Squeeze is not functional as is with "too many" disks.
