Yes, I now remember I added

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier      "TouchPad"
    MatchIsTouchpad "yes"
    Driver          "synaptics"
    # Supported options are given by "synclient -l"
    Option          "EmulateMidButtonTime" "0"
EndSection

in the past and this works. I was probably confused because the
X server logs say that the synaptics module is unloaded:

(II) UnloadModule: "synaptics"
