The left "windows" key is not set as Super_L but as a Mod4 modifier key.

Thus in keyboard shortcuts I cannot use it on its own, only in key
combination. (e.g. Mod4 + M)

This is gnome specific and not anything to do with system keyboard or X
server. The key works fine in a xfce session.

This used to work in Lenny's gnome version.
