In my case, it was the same thing, but I had specified XkbdVariant "us"
I thought that "us" couldn't do any harm, can it? Well I had to uncomment the line completely to fix it. I had to uncomment this line as otherwise the keyboard was not working it all. Not completely related but this happened when I updated from lenny to squeeze. I lost eth0 and my keyboard so after the update nothing worked anymore. Lost two working days.
