I did a fresh test install of libapache2-mod-php5 and my php5.conf contained
the following statement:
<IfModule mod_php5.c>
<FilesMatch "\.ph(p3?|tml)$">
SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
</FilesMatch>
And as expected it worked out of the box.
So I'm not able to reproduce your problem. Did you modified php5.conf or
something else?
