This was implemented upstream in 3.82.90 (Implement the --trace flag,

If you want to try it out, the development repository is accessible
over CVS:
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[email protected]:/sources/make co .
The full history is also served over rsync protocol for use with
tools like cvs2git that like to parse the RCS files directly.
rsync -zaP rsync://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/sources/make .
