tag 325346 - help thanks As it happens, I managed to get more debugging time in after all, and proceeded to track down the culprit; FTR, it's the hardcoded "4" in YPallocate_stack in c/g2c/goo/boot.c, which was [pre]generated from src/goo/boot.goo.
