Update: the bug doesn't seem to be related to whether the account is password-protected or passwordless, but to the FIRST account logged on after a fresh boot. If, say, user1 logs on first, and then the gdm switcher is used to log onto/switch into other accounts, the bug is not triggered until we try to switch to user1 again. Our temporary workaround consists in creating a dummy account and always loggging onto that account first, then switching out (not logging out) of it and never switching into it again. Unfortunately, this only seems to help about 75% of the time; meaning that roughly 25% of the time, the bug is triggered regardless, simply by switching between other accounts.

Also, apparently related, switching to a virtual terminal by pressing, say, ctrl-alt-F3, ALWAYS locks up the machine.

I'm trying to describe the bug as well as I possibly can, but it's somewhat erratic and hard to pinpoint...
