Possibly it's not related at all, but tonight I've burned two CDRs (Debian ISOs) on my old PPC Mac Mini (running squeeze), using
wodim -v speed=2 -eject debian-6.0.0-amd64-CD-1.iso and both times it ended up writing at 8x speed, and emptying the FIFO repeatedly. (It also pretty much locked up the machine in the meantime. I wish I could say that started with Squeeze, but as I recall it that also happened when I was running the previous stable and burned my first Squeeze RC CD some time in January. Before that time, burning worked perfectly, and as I recall it so did specifying a speed.) I include the output from one of the burnings here in case it's useful, as an attachment.
