A feature should work or a feature shouldn't be in there.
The last three lines I heard from my server were:

# /etc/init.d/networking restart
Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not enable again some interfaces ... (warning).
Reconfiguring network interfaces...

I think there shouldn't be a reason why to read init scripts before executing them, because many of them worked for years without trouble.

Maintainers should respect that and not brew their own tea.
