Package: binutils
Version: 2.21.0.20110302-1
Severity: important
Tags: sid

with the latest binutils update (I cannot check exactly when the bug
appeared) I am unable to compile a debian linux source kernel (from the
linux-source-2.6.37 sid package). I know it is not a bug in the kernel
itself because I tried to recompile the kernel I am now running (the
previous version of 2.6.37 available in sid) which worked fine before.

When I try to compile the kernel (regardless of whether I use the make-kpkg
tool or issue a straight "make vmlinux" command) I get (after some time)

  CHK include/linux/version.h
  CHK include/generated/utsrelease.h
  CALL scripts/checksyscalls.sh
  CHK include/generated/compile.h
  AS arch/x86/kernel/entry_64.o
arch/x86/kernel/entry_64.S: Assembler messages:
arch/x86/kernel/entry_64.S:1531: Error: .size expression does not evaluate
to a constant
make[2]: *** [arch/x86/kernel/entry_64.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [arch/x86/kernel] Error 2
make: *** [arch/x86] Error 2

In the top level makefile of the debian kernel (if I did not misread) AS is
defined as the command as, which should be /usr/bin/as from binutils in my
system. If I should file this bug against some other package, please let me
know.

Bye
Giacomo
