One possible reason for this could be if you have enabled Digest Authentication on the server but trying to use Basic Authentication on the client. In /etc/caldavd/caldavd.plist, disable Digest Authentication and enable Basic authentication. Then try connecting. Let me know if the problem is resolved.
After changing the configuration to only enable exactly *one* authentication scheme, the problem seems to be gone. I use digest auth exclusively now.
