could you please add a priority= field to the entries in /usr/lib/mime/packages/gnumeric? In particular, the msexcel entries should have a priority lower than libreoffice, say for instance 2 (that's what abiword uses for msword). Gnumeric is a very nice software, but it just doesn't work as well as libreoffice at showing random MSexcel files. Feel free to reassign to libreoffice-calc if you believe they are the ones who should increase their priority value.
