If my suspicion is right, and I have just hit this, then this has
nothing to do with "reentrancy" (I know what you mean, of course!)
Rather, it is simply a strange/interesting failure to follow symlinks to
a destination which needs to be automounted.

The interesting part is that it seems to be somehow stateful - if I
retry the exact same operation again, it succeeds.
