OTOH, I can't see why it would slow down the boot process.

As the kde start was very slow (about 2 min with the initial windows with the icons coming one per one with several 10th of seconds between each), I switched back to console mode and did "top" and "ps" to see that udev was constantly forking process). I also discovered that the lo interface was missing which explains the slow boot.
