I cloned my /pub/music/cds/.git into /tmp/testrepo/ and then tried this:
cd /home/francois
touch /tmp/testrepo/.git-annex/foo.log
git --git-dir=/tmp/testrepo/.git --work-tree=/tmp/testrepo add --
/tmp/testrepo/.git-annex/foo.log
and it worked fine :(
My /pub/music/cds/.git/config:
