Sorry, should have checked the BTS more carefully - scanned the texinfo bugs for "grep" and didn't see it. Naturally I now see that my own report does not itself contain that particular string in its subject field.
Will just hotwire LC_ALL=C in the Makefile of mine that calls the
offending command.
