Firstly, can you give more specific information on your user's error, and whether it still occurs with version 1.05-1 on unstable ? I'm assuming of course that your user isn't running chrooted - if they are, see the next paragraph. I think the problem with the chroot is that you don't have /proc mounted. start-stop-daemon seems to require this for at least some option combinations. Try making a chroot with /proc mounted, and see. The invocation of the initscript "stop" is added by dh_installinit which is out of my control so I'm not sure what I can do about it (apart from wholly suppressing errors on stop, which doesn't sound like a good idea).
