I have switched to dh and dh_python2 which makes things easier for me. Hope
you don't find these changes too intrusive.

I haven't had to patch configure.ac, python-dev is still pulled by
python-gtk2-dev but I do not see any problem with it (unless I haven't
understood the original problem).

The package builds fine, is lintian clean, but I haven't checked everything.

Note you have 2 spelling errors in your original changelog entries:
s/recommand/recommend/
s/canceling/cancelling/

As a user of gajim, I'd be happy to look into more details if you want, and
help you further if needed. Should you need a co-maintainer / uploader, I
can do this.
