the above mentioned infinite loop happened to me on two machines running Debian Squeeze. One of them is upgraded from lenny, the other is fresh install. When stopping bind, it gets the signal via rndc, stops listening on all ports but keeps running. This is the related syslog: May 12 12:07:21 mail named[3670]: received control channel command 'stop -p' May 12 12:07:21 mail named[3670]: shutting down: flushing changes May 12 12:07:21 mail named[3670]: stopping command channel on 127.0.0.1#953 May 12 12:07:21 mail named[3670]: stopping command channel on ::1#953 May 12 12:07:21 mail named[3670]: no longer listening on 127.0.0.1#53 May 12 12:07:21 mail named[3670]: no longer listening on 192.168.7.12#53 Funny thing is that this never happened when rebooting the server, but when switching to single-user or shutting down (ups too long on battery). I had to log-in (ssh was fortunately still up) and kill -9 named. Further attempts to reproduce this bug failed, but it happened to me at least three times. Perhaps fix for init script would be best solution - kill -9 if bind does not exit within few seconds.
