Package: upower Version: 0.9.10-1 Severity: normal Hey,
back in the hal time, xfce4-power-manager (and gnome-power-manager) could use it to know if the platform supported brightness keys or not, and if it had to do the job itself. For example on thinkpads the platform does it itself (wether directly by the EC or using the acpi video driver) and userspace doesn't have to do anything but display notification (if wanted). On other hardware, userland needs to take care of that, and xfpm/gpm did the job. Now, hal is gone and xfpm/gpm use upower, but apparently the information about brightness support is not available anymore. I'm not sure how gpm handles that, but in xfpm that means it tries to handle the key itself, meaning we get two steps each time one press brigthness keys (once by the platform, once by xfpm). So it'd be nice if upower could start providing this information to users, especially xfpm and gpm.
