I think one the file transfer proxies you use does strange things.

As a temporary workarround, you can disable file transfer proxies in
account preferences, General tab

Yes, that's it. Thanks for the workaround, will try to find the offending server, both are ejabberd, one is 2.1.6 and the other one is an ancient 1.x.
