signal 11 is segmentation fault, which means something's really wrong.
could you do "ldd /usr/sbin/mysqld"?  my guess without knowing more
is that maybe the c++ abi change is having some extra echo effects.

also, if could you answer the following questions, it'd be very helpful:
- do you use anything nonstandard in nsswitch.conf (ldap, nis)?
- are you running mysql in any kind of chroot/jail?
- any other non-default settings in my.cnf?
- before this upgrade, when was the last time you did an upgrade?
