After some debugging with the kind help of upstream, it seems we managed to track this issue down:

Simply recompiling the systemd package against linux-libc-dev from wheezy (2.6.32-31) made the problem go away. -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
