Can you clone the sane-backends git tree and do a bisect to pinpoint the faulty commit? start at e1f9664106039a4ab21f8d724f0f00d2013d2577 end at 04b0c72e35da3b9392afcfe2add9815027de1d48 Set BACKENDS=hp3900 before running configure to restrict the build to the hp3900 backend and speed things up.
