Hello! I just noticed that ifupdown now apparently has a new maintainer! This means that it's probably no longer impossible to add vlan support to ifupdown and the need to ship it from the iproute package as discussed in http://bugs.debian.org/520436 probably isn't needed....
Hopefully someone will get motivated by this to actually finish the work! :) (Hmm...
