It reported that the two binary files differed, so I ran zdiff -a, which spewed binary data. I then symlinked xxx.gz to xxx and ran: zdiff Accounts.xac.gz Accounts.xac.gnucash.20110520085906.gnucash.gz That worked fine. Please make zdiff work with gzipped files that don't have the .gz extension.
