Package: update-notifier Version: 0.99.3debian8 Severity: minor I have a file in /etc/apt/preferences.d/, pinning a certain package to -1 to prevent installation. This file is owned by root:root, and has 0600 as its permissions.
I noticed today, that the toolip for the update-notifier is far longer than it usually is. Second, the cache has nothing to do with my preferences file, I believe. Nor does it have anything to do with unmet dependencies. I'm not quite sure where the error message in the tooltip comes from, whether it is apt or a script that update-notifier uses - nevertheless, the tooltip could be formatted and worded better.
