before nis installation, the system has rpcbind installed, which should replace portmap. nis installation failed: dpkg returned an error during the configure stage, when update-rc.d is called. The debug output shows the problem: debconf (developer): starting /var/lib/dpkg/info/nis.postinst configure ... update-rc.d nis start 18 2 3 4 5 . stop 18 1 . update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing insserv: Service portmap has to be enabled to start service ypbind insserv: exiting now! update-rc.d: error: insserv rejected the script header It seems that this step does not handle the rpcbind case.
