Package: debhelper Version: 8.9.0 Severity: wishlist Recent toolchain versions support compressed debug sections, using zlib. When applied to the -dbg packages, it increases the size of the package by a few percents, but reduces the installed size by roughly a factor three.
I therefore think it's a good idea to add an option to dh_strip to enable compressed debug sections, passing --compress-debug-sections to objcopy. It might not be the default yet, as even if the toolchain is ready, some packages might not be fully ready. This is the case for example of the linux kernel, which can't deal with modules using compressed debug sections. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.39-2-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages debhelper depends on: ii binutils 2.21.52.20110606-2 The GNU assembler, linker and bina ii dpkg-dev 1.16.0.3 Debian package development tools ii file 5.04-5+b1 Determines file type using "magic" ii html2text 1.3.2a-15 advanced HTML to text converter ii man-db 2.6.0.2-1 on-line manual pager ii perl 5.12.3-7+b1 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii perl-base 5.12.3-7+b1 minimal Perl system ii po-debconf 1.0.16+nmu1 tool for managing templates file t debhelper recommends no packages.
