In file /usr/share/pyshared/avahi/ServiceTypeDatabase.py the variable filename 
is set on line 29 to
"/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/avahi/service-types.db" on my amd64 computer.

Changing it to
"/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/avahi/service-types.db"
resolves the problem.
