The lack of documentation was actually fixed in the Texinfo manual
(this was part of my bug report):
In Debian/lenny:
`-c'
`--no-create'
Do not create files that do not exist.
In Debian/squeeze:
`-c'
`--no-create'
Do not warn about or create files that do not exist.
