I have also had this problem intermittently for over a year.
I run many kwrites simultaneously under kubuntu 10.04 on my Lenovo Thinkpad R500 laptop. I find that this problem occurs roughly once per week and affects only part of one document per instance.
I find that the problem goes away after 5-10 minutes, so I need a bit of patience but no restart of kwrite. It may be associated with a cut-paste from a terminal window via the middle mouse button, but the occurrence pattern is not obvious.
I have also seen the problem on a later version of kubuntu (now replaced by 11.10) on my Toshiba Portege laptop.
